While one might say that the cast members of Mario Strikers: Battle League have a rotten personality, the game itself has a lot of substance thanks to excellent mechanics that are on point. I could clearly hear every trip, smack and wallop in clear, dynamic stereo sound as my team members ate grass after getting hit with a well-timed tackle or some other weapon of mass soccer destruction. The audio is also on point, sounding clear and punchy - no pun intended - when using a nice pair of headphones while playing on the go. It’s like the last 20 seconds of the Star-Spangled Banner every single time you pull them off. Special moves such as Hyper Strikes are also just about as understated as a Fourth of July fireworks show, looking positively flashy and over-the-top. Probably my favorite “modern” Final Fantasy game of the post-Final Fantasy VI and VII era.Ī lot can certainly happen after nearly two decades as Battle League boasts visuals that are much improved over its predecessors thanks to its crisp and more colorful graphics. Speaking of fantasy, I was actually getting a Final Fantasy X vibe with the intro scene, which was reminiscent of the blitzball scenes from that game. Mario Strikers Battle League: The (really) good The drought has been especially noticeable since Mario Strikers Charged was released just two years after the original Super Mario Strikers on Gamecube. That’s how long it has been since the last game in the franchise, Mario Strikers Charged, released on the Wii. In the case of Mario Strikers: Battle League, it’s a reunion that’s 15 years in the making. I mean, does anybody remember that “Happy Together” commercial for Super Smash Bros. Then again, this seems par for the course anytime Nintendo’s all-star cast of characters gets together for some harmless fun. Mario, Luigi, Toad, even the prim and proper Princess Peach and Rosalina are all party to my misery on the pitch as they drop any pretense of civilized behavior and proceeds to beat the ever-living stuffing out of me. Not that Bowser and Yoshi are the only guilty parties in this game. It’s like Rasputin meets soccer - or football for most of the rest of the world. While indulging in a friendly session of Mario Kart on the N64 marked by maliciously flung turtle shells, banana peels and other unsportsmanlike shenanigans, my Japanese roommate at the time made an interesting observation. ![]()
